Special Information and More on Sphalerite
Formation
Sphalerite is common in most "hydrothermal veins. It occurs with minerals; such as dolomite, quartz, pyrite, galena, fluorite, barite, and calcite."
Veins are deposits of minerals found inside a rock that is fractured which, are not part of the rock.
You can also perform tests or ways to find special things about a mineral.
When diluted, hydrochloric acid is put together with Sphalerite; it creates the smell of rotten eggs. EWW!! "It pure, it is infusible, but as the iron content of Sphalerite rises, the mineral specimen melts with increasing case."
Did you Know?
... that Sphalerite is not radioactive
... that Sphalerite is often called many other different names: False Galena(has properties similar to Galena)
Black Jack
Zinc Blende
ICSD 60378
Mock Lead
and many others
Sphalerite can also be anywhere from transparent to translucent. As you can tell, Sphalerite is a very diverse mineral.
Sphalerite is also in the group of Sulfides.
